SEN Policy booklet

How to understand and apply reforms in SEN policy

10th February 2015

Schools had to implement huge changes last year with the introduction of the new National Curriculum. Around the same time but less well publicised, a new SEND Code of Practice was written, which was enforced in September 2014. This reform was the most comprehensive re-validation of SEN for over 30 years, and focuses on:

  • every teacher being accountable for the progress and development of all pupils in their class
  • early identification of needs and intervention to support them
  • the cycle of assess, plan, do, review in order to meet the needs of children and young people with SEN
  • collaboration between education, health and social care
  • removing barriers to learning through inclusive practice.

Bestselling LDA author Lois Addy, the Specialist Lead for SpLD in North Yorkshire, was on the frontline of these changes. As part of a SEND Pathfinder Local Authority, Lois was responsible for training school staff on the whats, whys and hows of their changed responsibilities under SEN reforms. This experience placed her perfectly to write her latest book for LDA: How to understand and apply reforms in SEN policy. This resource is full of invaluable information and case studies and a welcome tool for any busy teacher who doesn’t have time to trawl through heaps of government documentation. Covering everything from the history of SEN legislation to linking educational support with health and social care, from early years right through to further education, this book really is your go-to guide. It even includes photocopiable tasks, quizzes and handouts perfect for staff training.

“This well written book is a must read for both professionals and teachers working in SEN. It translates SEN law into accessible language and should be used as a bible to understand the new SEN reforms. The book is packed with lots of practical examples which translate the new SEN reforms into action plans, providing a starting point for all SEN specialists to work from. Understanding SEN reform is not easy, but this book assures everyone that there is light at the end of the tunnel.” Amynah Bhanji, Special Needs Teacher and Writer.

The new SEND legislation needs to be applied to all children and young people aged 0–25 by April 2018, so buy your copy now!

Behaviour in the News

18th March 2014

Behaviour in schools has been highlighted in the news recently, as first Ofsted announced a rolling programme of unannounced visits to schools where ”standards of behaviour were giving cause for concern”, followed by the Department for Education’s issuing of new advice on “behaviour and discipline in schools”. Advice was offered to headteachers and school staff in all English schools on “developing the school behaviour policy” and on “the powers members of staff have to discipline pupils”.
